101 Dalmatians Villain Cruella de Vil Lands Live-Action Film: Details!

Hide your pups! 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil is getting her own live-action film, aptly entitled Cruella, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Monday, Oct. 12.

According to the site, Aline Brosh McKenna — who penned The Devil Wears Prada — has been hired to take on the fur coat-obsessed character. (Disney previously tackled Sleeping Beauty’s villain, Maleficent, in the 2014 movie of the same name. Angelina Jolie is set to reprise the role in Maleficent 2.)

Cruella de Vil first made viewers’ skin crawl in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. In 1961, she was voiced by the late Betty Lou Gerson in the Disney animated classic.

Cruella continued to wreak havoc on Roger and Anita’s dogs in the 1996 live-action reboot 101 Dalmatians. Glenn Close played the pipe-smoking diva opposite Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson.

“I was very aware of the audacity of trying to humanize what I think is a brilliant cartoon character because I know how much my daughter loves the story,” Close, 68, told The Morning Call at the time. “The cartoon character has a strong visual image — the bony shoulders, the white fur coat, the skeletal face. We took nearly four months to come up with her look. It took a lot of experimentation.”
